Lifetime of Love

My grandparents were married in 1938. I am amazed at how much their love for one another is still evident almost 70 years later.

While my grandfather is still as sharp as a tack, my grandmother's health and mind are failing. Although she doesn't seem to know what is going on around her at most times, she undoubtedly knows when "her man", as she still calls him, is in the room. When she seems agitated or confused, sitting her by her husband is all it takes to calm her. She snuggles up to him, holds both his hands, and lays her head on his shoulder. In that position she will sit peacefully for hours. I even witnessed her blow him a kiss from across the room yesterday.

Granddad is so patient and loving to her, never seeming frustrated at her constant chatter. He will lean over and kiss her forehead with a smile on his face. Yesterday he sat telling stories of their courtship, engagement, and honeymoon. I think he would have continued as long as he had an audience.

I am so thankful for the time I have been able to spend with them over the past week. What wonderful role models on what a lifetime commitment "through sickness and health, until death do us part" truly looks like.

I'm a friend of Jamie Garner's - we grew up together.(which is how I found your blog)
This is SO sweet. It reminded me so much of my grandparents. I look at couples like this and hope that is how my husband and I are in 50 years. What a neat love story!

What a great picture of Mr. and Mrs. Mackay! Can't believe they have been married for 70 years. Glad you had this week for you and your boys to spend with the both of them.
