Country life

Living in the country has LOTS of advantages, but there are also a few things that I could live without. For the past few days we have been watching this bird nest in a bush in our flower bed. Today when I peeked in there were a bunch of hungry babies. They are so tiny. We love watching the mother get worms and sit on the top of the house eating them before taking it down to share with her babies.

On the downside...it has been well established thru this blog that I am not a fan of snakes. I have nightmares about them after hearing a story about one.

Today after I picked up Z from school, the boys were playing in the car while I unloaded all of our loot. T kept hitting the garage door opener making the door go up and down. I noticed something hanging from the garage door as it rested on the ceiling. It was a snake!!! It was hanging down and sticking its tongue out at me. I grabbed a shovel and went after it for about 2 seconds before I realized that I was scared out of my mind! Plus I couldn't kill him because he was wedged up in the garage door. I called my dad and told him that this was a real emergency. Unbelievably, he showed up about 4 minutes later with gun in hand. The boys and I retreated to the backyard until we heard the fatal blow. We ran around to see a dead snake hanging from door. Super Dad knocked it down with a shovel so I could share this picture with you.

Brandon assured me that it was probably just a garden snake, I assured him that it was a very poisonous water mocassin. When I asked my dad what kind of snake he thought it was, he answered, "A dead one."

Thank you, thank you very much.

I hate snakes too. Yet another reason why I cannot live in the country!

Dad is just not right! I remember him shooting one when I was little and the bullet making it ricochet up about 2o feet in the air and after that I always thought all snakes could just jump up in the air like that. I have been extremely scared of them since!!!

Boy, you were right. It is a long snake! Good thing you all got him or he would have had the baby birds for lunch. I guess the guard dogs were too busy sleeping on the couch to bother with a snake. Never a dull moment! Love Mom

OH MY. That thing looks like it's 8 feet long. And I'm going to think of this every time my garage door opens FROM NOW ON! I'm always scared to walk into the barn at my parents' house because there are bird nests on the rafters, and I'm always afraid there will be snakes in the nests eating eggs...if one fell on my head you would never hear from me again.

OMG! I laughed so hard when I read this! What is it with you and snakes? I think they know you are afraid of them and just gather to torment you! Thank goodness your dad is close by...you always need someone with a shotgun around to shoot at garden snakes!!!

I am dying. Pretty much one of my worst fears to find a snake! And it looks so long!!!
